Las vegas gunman stephen paddock brain studied by scientists as potential brain donor

Scientists in Canada are conducting a study of the brain of a potential brain donor after a federal health official announced he was making a last-ditch effort to find a suitable specimen from the San Bernardino, Calif. gunman.

The brain is currently being studied by neurologists and neurosurgeons, says Dr. Richard Hsu, director of the Department of Neurology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.

"We've begun looking at the brain but there's also interest from some people who would like to donate. There's always the possibility of getting a donor brain, but right now we're waiting," he told the Associated Press.

The brain, part of an experimental brain-drinking technique, has never before been donated. That makes Hsu, 바카라 who specializes in the study of animals and 바카라 brain tissue, unique.

A brain-tissue donor typically is a transplant recipient and will continue to receive medical care despite the donor's death. A more traditional brain transplant typically requires multiple months of intensive medical treatment including hospital stays for severe neurological damage that can last months after an operation.

The brain from the San Bernardino shooter is being kept at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, according to the health minister, Rona Ambrose.

Hsu said the federal body responsible for the study has been trying to get people to donate their brains and other organs because some of the remaining people in the community still refuse to do so.

An emergency meeting took place Thursday, when Hsu and the other scientists said they had received enough feedback about their latest study and decided to move ahead with it.

"We've started to really hear from the public and I think they were really supportive," Hsu told the New York Times. "It's a really valuable opportunity. But right now we haven't received a lot of support so we haven't put anything together and we'll be looking to collect feedback."

Hsu was unavailable to speak to reporters Thursday on the record. However, he posted a statement on the university's website late Thursday saying his team had taken the decision to try and 바카라 obtain the brain from someone else.

"After a review of all of the available information and patient and organ donor consent, our university decided to conduct a tissue transfer for the safety and integrity of our students' health, to the best of our understanding and commitment, and to the highest ethical standards," he said.
