By sliding it into position, it darkens the sky, helping to balance the exposure overall.

I shot this image in raw format and slightly underexposed it in order to capture the drama of the clouds overhead. I then used an adjustment brush in Lightroom to selectively brighten up just the boat so it stands out more in the frame.
