I headed further north, around more sweeping roads and across stunning moorland. Lifestraw Go
Lifestraw Despite being one of the most popular water-filtering products on the market, the Lifestraw Go did not meet my expectations for filtering. The double-stage filtration includes a hollow-fiber membrane and a carbon capsule, yet this was the only bottle that produced water with particles after passing through the filter. That's not to say the Lifestraw Go isn't safe to drink from -- the particles were probably just sediment -- but it did produce a relatively strong mineral taste compared to the other bottles on this list.

On the opposite end of the scale, under extracted brews tend to have undeveloped flavors. Lacking sugars and other caramelized organic chemicals, these shots will taste sour, weak and watery.

Amanda Capritto/CNET The Mahaton self-cleaning water bottle (available for preorder for $44) features one purification cycle that eliminates up to 99.99% of waterborne pathogens. After three days of near-constant use, the bottle didn't show any signs of build-up -- no weird smells, no crusty films. 

Of course, you can also drop as little as $100, if you're willing to settle for a mediocre espresso, but I urge you not to pounce on products that cost less, especially if you plan on drinking espresso regularly. They may seem like a bargain at first blush, but they're often a waste of money and counter space, too.

The $129 Dash Rapid is part of a new wave of fast cold-brew coffee makers. It uses an electric pump to create internal vacuum pressure. This pressure causes water to circulate between a glass carafe, through coffee grounds within a filter chamber and back. The machine runs the loop continuously during the brewing process. Afterwards, in as little as 5 minutes, brewed coffee returns to the Dash's carafe. As cold brew goes, what the Dash makes has a bit of a weak taste. That said, it's drinkable and fits the bill if speed is your priority.
